michael leibundgut initially studied choir directing with hans-martin linde at the music academy in basel, switzerland, where he later completed his studies in voice with such teachers as stefan haselhoeff from mannheim, germany, margreet honig from amsterdam, holland, and yvonne prinz from vienna, austria. masterclasses and workshops with mikael eliasen, elisabeth schwarzkopf, samuel ramey and peter konwitschny followed.

michael leibundgut performed as a member of the international opera studio at the zürich opera house during the 2000-2001 theater season. from 2001 to 2005, he performed regularly with the theater st. gallen, where he sung such roles as gremin in tschaikowsky's eugen onegin, alidoro in rossini's cenerentola and lodovico in verdi's otello. guest performances followed at the opera houses in erfurt and bielefeld, the teatro lirico di cagliari and teatro la fenice, venice, as well as at the münich biennnale, where michael leibundgut performed the leading role in the world premiere of aureliano cattaneos' opera la philosophie dans le labyrinthe.

as regular concert performer, michael leibundgut nurtures a wide repertoire including both early music and 20th century music. his repertoire includes next to such works as xenakis' kassandra (performances in the berlin national gallery and in the pergamon museum) andrea lorenzo scartazzini's sappho-lieder (available on cd) which was personally composed for him.
